YXL Glorieta - The Leadership Conference in the West
The rich tradition of the Presbyterian Youth in America Conference (PYA West) has grown and now exists as yxlglorieta - The Leadership Conference in the West. This is a conference comitted to being used by the Lord to help high school students of the PCA discover, develop and improve their God-given leadership qualities to the glory of Christ and the good of their congregations.
An unchanging tenet of yxlglorieta is that Christ-centered leadership is essential for the rising generatiion. From Christ the Cornerstone, the Church receives her alignment; the rising generation of church leadership is poised to continue in faith, established and firm, unmoved from the hope held out in the Gospel (Col. 1.23). There is a realization that many of the students coming to yxlglorieta will pursue vocations in law, medicine, the arts, business, technology, professional ministry, etc. However, their most important participation is that participation in the life of the Church of Christ. Will the rising generation be up to the task? Of course not! Christ is the only Head of His Body, the only Beautifier of His Bride, the only Builder of His Building. At yxlglorieta, Christ-centered leadership is all in all!
Through the ministry of yxlglorieta, this new generation of church leadership is reminded of the Doctrines of Grace as the basis for servant leadership in Christ's church. The rising leader in the church needs the consistency of the Reformed faith and the whole counsel of God, and an understanding of the Gospel and the fullness of Covenant Theology.
Under the oversight of the Presbyterian Church in America and the General Assembly Committee of Christian Education and Publications (CE&P), yxlglorieta seeks the three following objectives: Identify, Assess, and Develop. That is, we first desire not simply to identify leaders, but to identify the God-given leadership skills present in each young man and woman. Second, we desire to 'measure' these gifts through observation and assesment from different vantage points (see our staff prerequisites). Third, through conversation and counsel, fellowship and working together, we seek to develop those young men and women in their calling.
Put as simply as possible, yxlglorieta strives to challenge our young men and women through the following means:
- Worship that is participatory in its very nature.
- The cultivation of love for one another over the course of this week and beyond.
- Outreach and planning for ministry that challenges the comfort level.
- Seminars and talks that are challenging and engaging.
- Required involvement and interaction with the seminars and talks.
- Initiatives, challenges, games, and rigors that reveal leadership skills and talents.
- Leadership which is both exemplified by our staff and imitated in the lives of the students.
- The exercise of authority by our staff, acceptance by our staff, and the submission of our staff.
YXL Glorieta desires to change the way these young men and women see themselves and the Lordship of Jesus Christ; in the space of a week, they will grow as a community of faith and deepen in their love for the church of Jesus Christ and see the Gospel as the way of life.
